A conversation with Latin American Brain Initiative on advancing global

In a recent interview conducted by Dr. Judy Illes, Chair of the International Brain Initiative (IBI), Dr. Luisa Rocha — professor in the Department of Pharmacobiology at Cinvestav and General Coordinator of LATBrain — shared her perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing neuroscience in Latin America.

“We need scientists who, in addition to working in the lab, speak directly to governments and society about the importance of science,” she stated.

During the conversation, Dr. Rocha emphasized that while Latin America has a strong tradition in neuroscience research, it faces significant obstacles such as political instability and limited government investment in science. In response to this, LATBrain seeks to take an active role in influencing public policy, advancing neuroscience education, and promoting science communication.

“We may not have the most advanced equipment, but we know how to innovate with what we have. That resilience and creativity are part of what Latin America can offer the world,” Dr. Rocha concluded.
